Celtic made heavy weather before seeing off the stubborn Hibs challenge. The only difference between the sides was John Hartson's clinical finish just after the half hour mark.
The home team made their usual aggressive start and Hibs were pinned back in the opening minutes. Keeper Tony Caig spilled an Alan Thompson corner under pressure from Dianbobo Balde before Alen Orman's tackle disposed Jackie McNamara as the Celtic skipper was about to pull the trigger.
There were loud appeals by the home side for a penalty when Hartson tumbled in the box under a challenge by Yannick Zabernardi but the referee dismissed their claims.
Hibs threatened occasionally on the break with Ian Murray twice volleying efforts that were not far off target.
Balde who had a superb game for Celtic, then disposessed Tom McManus when the Hibs striker looked clear on goal.
The home team made the vital break through when Henrik Larsson's astute pass was cleverly dummied on the 18 yard line, allowing Hartson to pick his spot low to the keeper's right.
It was perhaps understandable that Jonathan Gould looked rather insecure with his lack of first team action exposed by several less than impressive attempts at gathering crosses. From one such mistake McManus should have done better than head wide at the back post.
Caig produced a great save to block Balde's header from a Steve Guppy cross, and the centre-back was unlucky again soon after half time when his goal was disallowed for off-side after Hartson's header had found him clear in front of goal.
Larsson had another subdued afternoon with Paul Fenwick & Gary Smith marshalling the Celtic striker well. Larsson went down from a Fenwick tackle but the referee indicated that the defender had touched the ball first.
It was a nervous final few minutes for Celtic with Orman's drive from 20 yards just clearing the bar as Hibs looked to snatch a share of the points
