A Hibbies View on the trip to Essen

Last updated : 25 July 2005 By Brian Hine

What an excellent couple of days away, think my liver is pickled mind

Hard to say how many Hibbies were there as there was no segregation but I'd guess about 300-400 (sheepies please note ). Our flight alone was more than half full of Hibbies.

One unfortunate guy wearing a Rankers top walked into the bar in the departure lounge to see well over 100 Hibbies.
He was heard to say 'Aawww for funks sake' and for the last 20 odd minutes of the flight he was treated to all the usual Hibs songs including :- 'you are a weegie...'
'we hate glasgow rangers...'
and
' as i walked along the copland road...'

At the end of the flight he shouted out loudly for us all to hear :-
'I knew I should have gone to spain for ma holidays'

At the other end we jumped into a minibus for the 1 hour + journey to Essen. The guy driving the minibus turned out to be a Rot Weiss Essen fan who had come to pick up some Hibs fans. He didn't take any money for the journey. They really are a nice bunch of people.

Essen is a pretty quiet place. quite a lot of cafe bars but hardly anyone in them (until we arrived and livened the place up )

On the Friday had a few beers at the ground (hair of the dog after our heavy night on Thurs) with all the Essen fans then headed into the game. The Essen fans have a pretty vocal support. They started well and looked a decent enough side (until Hibs took control of the game after about 20 mins). Goals from Boozy, O'Connor and Caldwell gave Hibs a comfortable win in the end.
I missed O'Connor's goal as it was my turn to get the beers.
In fact most of the game was a bit of a blur

A very good performance from Hibs and a decent game for our new keeper, Zibby

After the game we ended up in a pub which showed the 50 goals against herts DVD. The place was jumping

Found a club after that and ended up there till about 5am very drunk

An excellent weekend enjoyed by both sets of fans. Apparantly some of the Essen fans are talking about coming over for the derby at ER in October.

Roll on the real thing in September

Hibs are going to Europe, Herts are going to butlins, na na na na...na na na na
