No new deals...........yet

Bobby Williamson has said that he won't be rushed into offering players who are nearing the end of their contracts - but will decide in the new year.

Gary Smith, Paco Luna, Janos Matyus, Derek Townsley and Tony Caig are all out of contract next summer, but it's up to them to earn new deals.

Bobby said: "We have a number of players who are out of contract but I won't be making a decision of their futures until January of February at the earliest. The players have got to earn the right for a new contract. They have to prove they are worth a new contract or the wage rises they might be looking for."

Gary Smith
BW admitted this may mean the players in question signing pre-contracts with other clubs after January 1 but it's a risk he's prepared to take. He continued: "I know this gives them the opportunity to speak to other clubs and they are welcome to do so. I have been in the position where we have opened talks with players early and still haven't managed to get anything signed until the end of their contracts - that is the gamble. This way, it also gives the club time and the players the opportunity to see if they can get the best deals for themselves."

Despite losses of £2.8m in the last fianancial year, the manager is still looking to improve the playing squad come the transfer window in January. Bobby added: "It is an ongoing job looking for new players, regardless of whether or not the transfer window is open. I have taken in seven matches this week and will continue to do so because we are always looking to strengthen the team."

On the news that 2nd choice 'keeper Tony Caig will be moving to Newcastle
Tony Caig
after a trial period last month, Bobby said: "It is up to Newcastle to make an offer. Certainly, we wouldn't want to deny him that sort of opportunity. He's out of contract in the summer and, as I said, we haven't decided who we will be offering new contracts to yet. With that in mind, I may have to look at bringing in another 'keeper."

It is understood Bobby has looked at one already, Hamburg goalkeeper Carsten Wehlmann. The German has been on trial at Easter Road, and has stated he would love a move to Scotland. Wehlmann said: "So far I have made a good impression. On Wednesday there is another friendly match that I should take part in."
