Hibs defender Gary Smith has left the club and teamed up with Hibs legend Mixu Paatelainen at Cowdenbeath.

Smith turned down offers from Partick Thistle and Airdrie Utd, to go to fife.

Gary Will keep playing next season for Cowdenbeath, aswell as helping Mixu out with first team affairs and will also take charge of the U19 side.

Smith is in the middle of taking his SFA coaching badges and once he has passed them, will join big Mixu as part of the management set-up at The Blue Brazil.

Big Mixu said:

"Gary is a very experienced and quality defender who has played at the top level, in the SPL and abroad, all his life.

"He will be absolutely fantastic for our squad. We have a young team and we need experience and Gary will provide that.

"He will also join the club in a coaching role which is very important. He will bring his invaluable knowledge to the club and hopefully we will get the benefit of his experience and long playing career.

"He was looking to go into that side of the game. I spoke to him and he was delighted to get the chance to do that.

"There were full-time clubs interested in him and he spoke to them but thankfully he has decided to join Cowdenbeath.

"He will be vital to us. We have gone up a division so we will be playing against better teams next season so he will be very important.

"I know Gary well from my Hibs days and I also played with him at Aberdeen as well. I know he's a good pro and does everything right. He is a role model and that's the kind of character we need at this club."

Smith started his career at Falkirk, before moving onto Aberdeen. He spent 2 and a half years at Pittodrie, before moving to French side Rennes for a season. Hibs brought him back to Scotland in 2002 and he has spent 4 years at Hibs. He was the only surviving member of the 6-2 team.

Gary has been a brilliant servant at the club!

Good Luck Gary, from all at Hibernian-Mad!
