Hibs summer transfer window round-up 2008/09

Last updated : 05 September 2008 By Steve Forbes

Another summer transfer window has come and gone, and we here at Hibernian-Mad take a look at the comings and goings at Easter Road over the summer.

IN:

David Van Zanten, 26:

The Hibees secured the Irish right back on a pre-contract agreement last season from fellow SPL side St Mirren. The ex Celtic player signed a three-year-deal at Easter Road, becoming Mixu Paatelainen's first summer signing.

Joe Keenan, 26:

The ex Chelsea player was secured on a free transfer from New Zealand side Melbourne Knights and is equally comfortable in midfield and left back and has signed a two-year-deal at the club.

Steven Thicot, 21:

Can play either centre half or can operate in a defensive midfielder role, a product of the famous INF Clairefontaine academy before joining
Nantes. He captained the French U17 side to glory at the European U17 championships in 2004.

Thicot spent some time on loan at CS Sedan from
Nantes before the Hibees snapped him up on a free transfer on a three-year-deal.

Fabian Yantorno, 25:

The Hibees secured the exciting Uruguayan playmaker after he was let go by now defunct
Gretna. When the Borders club went into administration, Gretna couldn't keep up the financial side of Yantorno's recovery after he suffered knee ligament damage in a challenge with Falkirk keeper Tim Krul.

Hibees boss Mixu offered Yantorno the chance to complete his rehabilitation at Hibs new state-of-the-art training facility, with a view to a deal. He promptly impressed the Easter Road manager and was signed up on a two-year-deal.

Steven Pinau, 20:

Hibs boss Mixu Paatelainen snapped up the 20-year-old striker on a year long loan deal from Italian Serie A side
Genoa.

Paatelainen had been chasing the player for some time and finally landed his services over the summer. Pinau joined
Genoa on a 5-year-deal in the summer from French cracks Monaco and arrives at Easter Road highly rated.

Souleymane Bamba, 23:

The powerful centre half arrived on transfer deadline day for a fee of £75,000 from first division side
Dunfermline.

The 6ft 3in
Ivory Coast international can play either as a centre half or as a defensive midfielder and adds yet more height and power to the Hibs side.

Bamba signed a three-year-deal after he arrived back from the 2008 Olympics in
Beijing, where he played twice for the Ivory Coast as they lost out at the quarter final stage.

He made over 50 appearances for
Dunfermline after signing for the Pars from the Paris St Germain youth system.

Derek Riordan, 25:

The Hibees splashed out £400,000 to secure the signing of prodigal son Riordan from Celtic on a three-year-deal.

Riordan returns to the club he has supported all his life and also the club which he started his career at. He scored over 60 goals in three season at Easter Road before signing for Celtic in a £175,000 deal just as his contract was about to run out at Hibernian.

He has one Scotland cap, gained a friendly with Austria in 2005.

The signing of Riordan could see him from up a formidable striker force with fellow
Scotland striker Steven Fletcher and see the crowds at Easter Road shoot up even further than they have over recent years.

OUT:

Guillaume Beuzelin:

Highly popular French playmaker joined English Championship side
Coventry City under freedom of contact after four years in Edinburgh. Superb player and a huge hit with the fans. Part of the 2006/07 League Cup winning side and will be hugely missed at Easter Road.

Brian Kerr:

Contracted terminated by mutual consent. Currently unattached, never fulfilled his early hype. Scored the winner at Tynecastle during the
Edinburgh derby against Hearts in the first game of the 2007/08 season, with his first touch of a ball in a Hibs shirt and will be remembered by the Hibs support for that.

Martin Canning:

Contracted terminated by mutual consent - Signed for SPL side Hamilton Accies on a one-year-deal.

Signed for Hibs after he was released by Gretna, played twelve games last season and made just one this year.

Zibi Malkowski:

Contract terminated by mutual consent.

Signed from Dutch giants Feyenoord is 2004 by former manager Tony Mowbray.

One of the worst goalkeepers in the club's history, cost the Hibees a number of points over the last four years with gaff after gaff.

Spent time on loan at Gretna, and won a first division championship medal, after playing 15 times for the now defunct Borders club.

Also had a spell on loan at Inverness Caledonian Thistle, only played a handful of games and returned to Easter Road at the end of last season.

Demott McCaffrey:

Contract terminated by mutual consent - The Northern Ireland U21 defender signed for SPL Falkirk on a three-year-deal.

Keegan Ayre:

Out of contract - The Canadian midfielder had been tipped to become a huge sensation at Easter Road, he was voted Canadian Young Player of the Year in 2005, but never quite lived up to his reputation.

Patrick Noubissie:

Contract terminated by mutual consent - French midfielder was on of John Collins signings last summer, but only ever made four appearances in a Hibs shirt. Spent time on loan at
Livingston and Dundee. Current whereabouts unknown.

Mickael Antoine-Curier:

Freed - The French forward signed for Hibs after impressing former boss John Collins in a closed door match against
Livingston last pre-season, scoring four goals in the game.

Signed for the Hibees then failed to hold down a regular place, only played twelve games and scored four goals.

Was sent out loan by Mixu Paatelainen to first division side
Dundee, he became a huge hit at Dens Park, scoring ten goals in 15 games.

Has now signed a permanent deal with
Dundee.

Clayton Donaldson:

The Englishman arrived in huge publicity after signing on a pre-contract agreement from
York City.

He had scored 50+ goals for the Blue Square Conference side in two years and much was expected of the speedy forward.

Failed to live up to the hype, scored 6 goals in 22 games and was sold to Crewe Alexandra in a £200,000 deal.

Abdel Zarabi:

Contract terminated by mutual consent.

The left back arrived at Easter Road for £100,000 from French side Gueugnon during the last January transfer window, was a complete flop and was quickly released.

Current whereabouts unknown.

Abdessalam Benjelloun:

The fans favourite has joined Belgian side RSC Charleroi on a loan deal until January after a frustrating last twelve months in
Edinburgh.

His 07/08 season was hampered by injury and loss of form and only played in a handful of games. Has been loaned out for a fresh start and to gain some confidence.

Hugely popular with the support, the Moroccan international striker scored two as the Hibees lifted the Scottish league Cup in 2006/07 with a 5-1 win over
Kilmarnock at Hampden. Has made noises about making his loan permanent.

Merouane Zemmama:

Probably the biggest surprise departure of the summer.

Has joined United Arab Emirates side Al Sha'ab on loan due to personal reasons and this deal does not signal the end of his career at Hibs.

The midfield magician has had problems getting his new, pregnant, wife in to the
UK as she is only 17-years-old. She was refused entry as she is not yet 18 and Hibs have allowed Zemmama to leave the club on a one-year loan deal to be with his wife.

His wife should then be able to enter the country and Zemmama will then return to the fold at Easter Road.

A VERY busy summer at Easter Road!

There could still be some movement with Paatelainen insisting he could still tie up a deal for an unattached goalkeeper, should the right one come along
.
