Hibs hot on the trail of Icelandic defender

According to reports in an Icelandic newspaper, Hibs boss John Hughes is hot on the trail of a new centre half.

Keflavik defender Haraldur Freyr Guðmundsson has been training with the Hibees at the clubs £5m state-of-the-art training facility at East Mains, Tranent, and also played against Hamilton Accies in a closed door game yesterday.

The game finished 1-0 to Hibs, with young Irish forward Kurtis Byrne scoring the only goal of the game.

Guðmundsson is 27-years-old and has been capped twice by the Icelandic national side.

He started his career with hometown club Keflavik, staying 5 years and making 62 appearances, before moving to Norwegian side Aalesunds FK.

Another 5 years were spent in Norway with Aalesunds FK, making 50 appearances, before moving to Cyprus.

Guðmundsson was snapped up by Cypriot side Apollon Limassol at the start of this year, but after only 15 games, the move turned sour and he has ended up back with first club Keflavik.

Guðmundsson said:

"They seem to be serious about this as they have asked my agent to come over and we will hold talks later this week.

"The friendly was set up for me and I did fine. Hibernian are searching for a new centre half, and hopefully I have done enough to win a move there"
