Hibs defender Steven Whittaker has tonight headed along the M8 to join Rangers for £2m.

Whittaker, 23, has signed a five-year deal at Ibrox and successfully went through a medical today.

The classy full back, who can operate in midfied and defence, follows the well beaten path along the M8 from Easter Road.

In the last two years Hibs have lost:

Rangers: Ian Murray (Bosman), Kevin Thomson (£2m) and now Whittaker (£2m).

Celtic: Gary Caldwell (Bosman), Derek Riordan (Bosman), Scott Brown (£5.5m), Chris Killen (Free).

Hibs boss John Collins had to face up to losing yet another player to the Old Firm and just a month after telling us no more would be sold, he said:

"We were not looking to sell Steven, but have now been offered what I believe is a good fee for a player who has been a great servant to this club, he has been a model professional who has given everything. As often happens in football he has been made an offer that will likely set him and his family up for the rest of his life. He was at the top of our wage scale and there was no way we could match the type of offer he has been made. We wish him all the best.

"We have I believe an excellent replacement for Steven in Kevin McCann, as well as Thierry Gatheussi who can also play that position and has recently signed a two-year contract with the club. We have seen a number of players leave the club over the last 9 months or so but I'm pleased to note the substantial reduction in Hibernian's debt with our new Training Centre paid for, and I'm sure everyone will agree that this is a fantastic position for the club to be in."

Hibs have now made over £10m in transfer fees in the last 18 months and the board must SURELY act and give manager John Collins some cash to spend, or all the hard work over the last few years is going to fade away to nothing.

Scott Brown - £4.4m up front (Rising to £5.5m with add ons) - Celtic
Ivan Sproule - £500,000 - Bristol City
Kevin Thomson - £2m - Rangers
Steven Whittaker - £2m - Rangers
Garry O'Connor - £1.6m - Lokomotiv Moscow
Derek Riordan - £200,000 - Celtic
Shelton Martis - £50,000 - West Brom

At last count our debt was sitting at £6m and we were told our new £4m training facility had ALREADY been paid for, so what is the plan for the rest of the money???
