Hibs have today announced that Darren McGregor has taken up a new role with the club and effectively retired.
McGregor, 36, has taken a new post as Player/Coach with the Hibees development side and will mix coaching, along with playing with the new development side, and will work with Steve Kean and Gareth Evans.
It also means his playing days for the first-team are over.
Speaking to the official club website, he said:
“At the end of last season I was lucky enough to have that unforgettable game where I was able to captain the team to a 4-0 win with my kids beside me as mascots,.
“I think after that game I knew my playing time would be very limited next season. Steve Kean spoke to me shortly afterwards and proposed the idea that I could help out with the Development Squad in a mentor/coaching and playing capacity.
“I feel it is a great opportunity for me as it can allow me to continue playing whilst also developing my coaching experience under the mentorship of Steve and Gareth.
“I have said many times before that if I am not able to play for Hibs, then the next best thing is to be able to help develop the younger guys.
“Going forward it is a new chapter in my life and I am excited to play a part in the development of these younger guys both on and off the field.”
McGregor played 188 times for the Hibees, and was part of the legendary 2016 Scottish Cup winning side, and was also part of the side that won the Scottish Championship and gained promotion back to the top division a year later.
HIBS-MAD VIEW:
It's sad to see Darren hang up his boots, for first team football anyway.
He has been a fantastic singing for the club and is of course a 2016 legend.
It's good to see the club keeping him involved, and he should be an excellent coach and will also be a massive help on the pitch for the new development side next season.
