Hibs have moved quickly to replace the recently departed Steve Kean as Academy Director.
The Hibees have appointed former striker Gareth Evans to replace Kean, who joined Georgin side Torpedo Kutaisi as their new manager last week.
Evans steps up from coaching in the Academy, a position recently taken over by Hibs legend Darren McGregor.
The popular Englishman has been involved with the club in various roles, on and off since he arrived as a player in the 80's, playing over 300 games and scoring 38 goals.
He was, of course, part of the Hibees 1991 League Cup winning squad.
Evans has also held coaching positions with the Scotland set-up and brings a wealth of experience to the role.
Speaking to the official club website, Gareth said:
“I am delighted to be trusted with this role and will continue to build and develop the Club’s Academy set-up.
“We have a lot of talented coaches and players at HTC, and I’m really passionate about developing young players. Hibs has a great tradition of that, and I want that to continue with the coaches and players at the Club.”
Hibs CEO Ben Kensell added:
“Becoming Academy Director was the natural progression for Gareth after playing such a key role, alongside Steve, in the strategic outlook and progression of our Academy set-up.
“As a club we always have to have progression plans in place, and plan for the future, and following conversations with Brian (McDermott), and Lee (Johnson), it was obvious to us that Gareth was the right fit for the position.
“Continuity in the Club and in the Academy set-up is vital for success and with Gareth we not only have that, but we have a top coach and someone with an excellent track record of developing young players.
“We look forward to seeing the impact he has on our young players in this role.”
HIBS-MAD VIEW:
Sure to be a popular appointment with the fans and within the club.
A coach with vast knowledge, who knows and loves the club and is a former cup winning legend player to boot!
Steve Kean left the club's Academy and Development side in a good state, let's hope Gareth can move it on again and we start seeing some of these exciting kids in the first team.
